Yes, the archive server does require an OCS license. You would use a Standard Edition license for Archive servers.

I believe my post indicated that you can use a standard NAT firewall to publish the web components but that a reverse proxy is preferred for security reasons. If you do not have access to a reverse proxy and/or are comfortable with the limited security you get with a NAT solution, you can simply NAT a public IP to the private IP of your web components server.

Mike

I understand you can do this, but according to others you would not get Adddress Book downloads, DL expansion or meeting content? We're putting an Edge server in our DMZ (Cisco firewall). Is there a way to configure the firewall to allow these things to work?

Say that a public IM which is not yet in the fold (AOL, Yahoo, MSN) wants to join the provisioning of Instant messaging and wants to be part of the circle. Using OCS, what would be the ramifications?

The Edge server is a separate role that is required for internet-facing scenarios. Your questions would be more efficiently served by reviewing some of the existing documentation available from Microsoft. Here is a link to a rollup of the OCS 2007 documentation:

www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

The main pieces to read that will address your questions are:

- "Step 1. Determine Key Planning Considerations" in OCS_Planning_Guide.doc

- "Step 6. Plan for External User Access" in OCS_Planning_Guide.doc

- "Overview of Office Communications Server 2007 Enterprise Edition" in OCS_EnterpriseEditionDeployment.doc

But I've don't exactly understood what is Edge Server:

is it an OCS role or a different sofware?

And if it is an OCS role, is it possible to install on the same subnet two OCS Standard (no Enterprise)?.

I've read, in fact, that only OCS Enterprise can be splitted on different machines.

Thanks in advance.

You will need 1 more Windows and 1 more OCS Standard license for the Edge server that you'll need to support external connectivity. The Edge services cannot run on the same server that hosts users. Besides that, and assuming your external users meet the requirements outlined by Microsoft for that type of license, that looks correct to me based on my understanding. Obviously your reseller will have the final word on this.

for this environment:

- All users are External users

- all users needs Audio/Video/conferencing/IM and eventually PSTN connectivity

- only one server

- the right bandwidth available

the only licenses needed are:

- N. 1 Windows Server R2

- N.1 OCS 2007 Standard (KNA-00100)

- N. 1 External Connector Enterprise (to support unlimited external users)

- N 1/users Communicator (B6I-00690)

- N.1 PIC/user/year

- NO Standard/Enterprise CAL needed

- All roles : Access Edge Server, Web Conferencing Server, A/V Conferencing Server and Reverse Proxy are hosted and installed on the single OCS 2007 Standard Server.

- For PSTN connectivity (to allow External User to receive and place calls from and to PSTN network) I need to purchase and deploy an hardware Media Gateway as those provided by Audio Codes.

Is the right configuration ?

Thanks in advance.
